A chocolate smoothie sounds almost too naughty to have right before bed but with the right ingredients, it can be just the treat your body needs to help you sleep.
Having a heavy meal before bedtime will make you uncomfortable, make it hard for your digestive system and not help you sleep. That’s why a light smoothie is the best option and this one contains healthy ingredients which are great to help you sleep.
This recipe contains cacao powder, bananas and almond butter which feature sleep inducing nutrients. These ingredients contain magnesium to help your muscles relax, and potassium to help you sleep through the night.
Cacao is raw chocolate in its natural state and is known as a superfood with very high antioxidant properties. In fact cacao’s antioxidants are 40 times that of blueberries. It contains calcium too and is the highest plant-based source of iron there is. Period. That is just amazing.
The smoothie is sweetened further with dates. Dates contain potassium, magnesium and calcium which are great for sleep. Calcium processes tryptophan and melatonin, hormones that are natural sedatives. Naturally sweetening your smoothies is much healthier than adding ingredients like sweetened yoghurt or ice cream. You don’t want that nasty processed sugar.
The final ingredient, avocado, is a good source of magnesium, and they also contain more potassium than bananas. These are effective sleep-inducing nutrients.
